BIKE TIP
Endurance versus Speed
If you’re starting to ramp up your miles this spring, you might be wondering:
Should I try to go faster… or farther?
My take: endurance unlocks both.
Creating a solid Zone 2 training base (60%-70% of your maximum heart rate) takes time in the saddle. You shouldn’t feel like death, too hard, and you’re no longer training for endurance. You shouldn’t feel like daisies, either. If a marathon runner only trained with long walks, they wouldn’t improve much.
If you want to get faster, what it takes is an extra workout per week. Intervals.
Repeating short sets spiking to Zone 3 or 4 (70%-90% of your maximum heart rate) take your endurance base and raise the speed. No endurance base = No extra speed. These workouts could look like 7 minutes hard, 3 minutes easy, repeated 4 times.
That is more or less my training plan this spring.
