Halfway Through My World Record

Plus, a fundraising update

Welcome to the Bike Bulletin, the newsletter exclusive fueled by candy, tailwinds, smooth roads.

Just a quick check-in today. I’ve been logging MILES (KILOMETERS) this week.

—Sam Westby @samcwestby

This is a weekly newsletter about bike trips, urban cycling, and a love for two-wheeled transit. The more time you spend on a bike, the better. I share new editions every Thursday, gearing you up for the ride ahead.

RIDE REPORT

On US-23 somewhere in Kentucky

I’m halfway into my ride through 19 U.S. States in 1 Week. This is officially the silliest thing I’ve done.

The Highs:

  • Simplicity, I can’t do anything except ride my bike all day

  • Sunrise and Sunset. I’ve been outside for both for the past 4 days. Nothing better

  • Having my dad here. He drove out to meet me on the night of Day 2. His support has made this way easier.

The Lows:

  • Mornings. Getting rolling stinks, and the first hour of riding is tough.

  • No time to relax. I would love to hang out at a cafe for an hour, but that was what France was for a couple months ago. Now it’s go time

How have we already raised $7300??

As someone who creates a lot of online content, I still get squirmish about public commitments. Just saying, “I’m planning to raise money for an org” invites risk. What if I don’t reach my goal? What if people start to doubt me?

This goes for more than just raising money. This goes for my current ride. This goes for my PhD. This goes for anything noteworthy. Am I capable of what I set out to do? Probably, but I won’t know until I do it.

And that, folks, is the definition of accomplishment. Let yourself teeter between success and failure. Tolerate the pain of not knowing where you’ll land. There is no “accomplishment“ without failure.

Question if you feel like replying and sharing your opinion:

  • What do you think about these abbreviated newsletter versions when I’m on trips?

  • Do you miss the full Bike Bulletin versions?

  • Do you like the the quick update versions?

Thanks, that is all
