This is a weekly newsletter about bike trips, urban cycling, and a love for two-wheeled transit. The more time you spend on a bike, the better. I share new editions every Thursday, gearing you up for the ride ahead.

BIKE TRIP TIP

Standing Out of the Saddle

One of the best ways to keep your butt from hurting after long days is also one of the simplest. Stand as much as possible. If there’s a small climb, I love giving my butt a break. Small actions like standing a couple of times an hour add up and can keep you riding longer.

I notice this when I transition from a mountainous area to a flat one. After a few hours on flat roads with no need to stand, new aches pop up that I didn’t experience in the mountains.

Other tried and true methods for butt pain:

  • Proper bike fit

  • A bike seat that fits with your sit-bone width (women have wider sit-bones than men)

  • Taking breaks

  • Riding more. Some pains just go away after a couple of weeks of riding.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

Darren Alff, aka Bike Touring Pro and been a player in bike touring media for about a decade. This 8-year-old video showed up in my recommendations, and I loved the casual atmosphere that only existed on old YouTube. I miss old YouTube.
